Imagine the sky filled with biplanes as pilots trained for World War I at Carlstrom and Dorr U.S. Army airfields built 100 years ago east and southeast of Arcadia only 15 years following the Wrights brothers’ inaugural flight. Soon, the town proudly proclaimed itself the “Aviation City of Florida.”
The DeSoto County Historical Society invites everyone to a centennial commemoration of the two aviation training camps and to celebrate the history and heritage of southwest Florida at the 14th annual Pioneer Day and Barbecue. This family-fun festival is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 17, at DeSoto Veterans Memorial Park, on State Road 70 just west of Arcadia.
