The DeSoto County Historical Society is nominating the Pine Level Townsite to the National Register of Historic Places. Pine Level was established in 1866 as the county seat of Manatee County composed of the lands that today are Charlotte, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee and Sarasota counties.
Although located geographically in the center of that area, Pine Level was also far removed from Manatee Village, the first county seat and politically allied to the Confederate cause. Pine Level may have been considered a “freedman’s town” as one of the first four residents was an African-American family. It was also a Florida frontier town, as rowdy as any of the more notorious villages of the “wild West” with saloons and shoot-outs.
