Homeless advocacy group raises questions, lacks answers

But advocates agree a permanent solution is needed. Arcadia does not even have a permanent location where people without a place to live can consistently go overnight.

A group of community leaders organized to address issue of homelessness in DeSoto County met again on Jan. 30, but no conclusions were reached or clear actions taken. The group agreed to hold a third meeting, probably at the offices of the DeSoto County Homeless Coalition, but a date has not yet been set.

Issues related to homelessness took center stage in Arcadia recently when the five-member City Council passed an ordinance to prohibit aggressive panhandling and lewdness. Some downtown merchants had complained that homeless individuals were aggressively panhandling and annoying or scaring customers, and had been exhibiting behavior deemed lewd.
