As temperatures rise across Southwest Florida, so do unemployment rates — an indicator that snowbirds across the region have headed back North to escape the summer heat.
Friday, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported that the unemployment rate in Charlotte County rose by 0.4 percentage points from April to May, registering a 5.9 percent rate last month. In May 2013, the county’s jobless rate stood at 7.1 percent. The local figures are not seasonally adjusted.
