Arcadian, Bauer win state press awards

Arcadian Assistant Editor Steve Bauer won second place in two feature-writing categories in the Florida Press Association's annual contest.

The Florida Press Association awarded The Arcadian second place in its annual contest to select the best overall weekly publication in the state of Florida. Assistant Editor Steve Bauer also won two awards for feature writing.

The contest, which covers calendar year 2013, required entrants in the “Overall Excellence” competition for weekly publications to submit three complete issues of the paper, including two consecutive issues plus one other. The Arcadian submitted issues from August 1, August 8 and Nov. 7, 2013. The August 1 issue included a front-page feature on people who care for stray and unwanted pets. The August 8 issue reported on City Council considering whether to dissolve the Arcadia Police Department. The Nov. 7 issue reported a story about Johnny Georges, inventor of the Tree T-Pee, appearing on the ABC hit TV program. “Shark Tank.”
