PUNTA GORDA — The Southwest Florida Water Management District has agreed to earmark roughly $1.5 million in funding for preliminary water testing in connection with Punta Gorda’s proposed reverse-osmosis plant, provided Charlotte County commits to a multimillion-dollar pipeline expansion with the Peace River/Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority.
Monday, the governing body of the water district, commonly known as Swiftmud, met in Tampa to vote on a tentative 2015 fiscal year budget, which includes funding for various projects in the region. Among the projects considered was Punta Gorda’s reverse-osmosis water-treatment plant that, at one point, received Swiftmud’s full backing and support, but later was downgraded on the district’s list of priorities.
