The Fabric of Our Faith: Jonah’s journey, part 4

As an ordination candidate with the United Methodist Church, I was required to take clinical pastoral education. I was accepted into a six-member class at Orlando’s Florida Hospital. The other five students consisted of two Baptist clergy, two Seventh-day Adventist nursing home chaplains, and one Roman Catholic hospital counselor.

The course involved seven months of twice-a-week sessions. Our CPE supervisor scheduled a variety of lectures on hospital chaplaincy every Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoons, we met to evaluate one another’s notes from our visits to presurgery patients the previous Wednesday evening. Wednesday mornings we met as a group with our CPE supervisor to discuss our individual progress in the program.
