Chalet Suzanne closed this week. Keeping that one-of-a-kind level of service and fine dining open in today’s cookie-cutter world was no longer profitable.
In the late 1930s and early ’40s, when our father traveled the state as a CPA auditing small towns and cities, there was only one resident for every eight to 10 who are here today. He declared that Florida had only two gourmet restaurants: one was the Columbia in Tampa’s Ybor City, and the other was Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales.
