With August being the traditional “Dog Days of Summer,” sipping lemonade and escaping the heat by staying inside with the air conditioner running overtime, neighbors on Garden Avenue may not have noticed the group of volunteers working in their neighborhood. With an unprecedented demand for affordable homes, Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity began construction earlier than normal this year to accommodate an increased number of partner families.

One such partner family is Jessica Richardson. Jessica previously attended Southern Technical College and is currently employed in the nursing field. On a recent Saturday, she and a group of individuals from Southern Technical College came out for a build day to help with a partner family’s “Sweat Equity.” The task at hand was to secure the trusses. Under the careful guidance of CC Habitat site supervisors Tom O’Neill and Randy Stuart, they had a productive day and helped a deserving family move one step closer to home ownership. Ruth Williams, Freshman Studies Program Manager for Southern Technical College, partnered with CC Habitat earlier in the year to offer a tuition reimbursement program for students who volunteer up to 60 nonprofit hours per semester. She also joined the group on their recent build day. CC Habitat is grateful for the many upstanding individuals who have taken advantage of the program and have chosen to volunteer with them. For information on how you can schedule a build day or get involved in our program, call Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity at 941-639-3162.
