Serious foodies met at Temple Shalom in Port Charlotte one evening recently to sample some delicious homemade desserts and get a taste of author Allen Salkin’s book “From Scratch: Inside the Tumultuous Billion-dollar World of the Food Network.”

Salkin, a journalist and former reporter for the New York Times, obtained inside access to personal stories and facts about Food Network stars, executives, producers and staff.
