Battery arrest at local park

PORT CHARLOTTE — Narcotics detectives arrested a Port Charlotte man on battery charges Wednesday after he allegedly grabbed an undercover detective in the groin at a local park. As a result of citizen complaints of sexual activity, members of the Narcotics Unit conducted an undercover operation at Sunrise Park on Edgewater Drive in Port Charlotte. The detective, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, parked his vehicle and went into the men’s restroom. An older man, who had been sitting in his car in the parking lot when the detective arrived, followed him into the restroom. According to the report, the man had his hand inside his open pants fly when he entered the restroom.

When the detective left the restroom, the man who was identified as Jerry John Digeronimo, 88, of the 22500 block of Westchester Blvd. in Port Charlotte, followed him outside. The detective reported that Digeronimo began talking to him about things of a sexual nature, including telling him that he had “a hot body.” During the conversation, without receiving permission to do so Digeronimo allegedly reached out and grabbed the detective in the groin.At that point, other detectives in the area were given the signal to move in to arrest Digeronimo. He was charged with battery and booked into the Charlotte County Jail. As of this report, he was being held on a $1,000 bond.
