PORT CHARLOTTE — The Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte County Utilities want to warn residents of a possible scam taking place involving phones calls alleging the caller is from CCU. A representative of Charlotte County Utilities reported to the Sheriff’s Office today that the utility had heard from several customers that someone has been calling Charlotte County residents with an offer to let them pay their utility bill over the telephone with a credit card. So far, none of the customers has reported giving out any information. The CCU representative said company has heard of this going on for some time and had previously sent out press releases as a warning to residents. Anytime anyone receives a “cold call” that was not solicited, you need to be very cautious of the information provided to the caller. Scammers can be very sophisticated in their use of technology to make it appear that a call is coming from somewhere other than the true phone number.
