Alleged human smugglers charged

Six members of a human-smuggling organization — including one from Port Charlotte and two from North Port — have been indicted on serious federal charges, U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III announced Friday.

The unsealed indictment from the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida’s Tampa Division lists Mario Emilio Tamayo-Mejias, 51, of Port Charlotte; and Carlos Velazquez-Roman, 52, and Jasmine Santos-Martinez, 40, both of North Port, among those charged with conspiring to bring more than 100 illegal immigrants into the country. The group was involved in attempted smuggling from at least May 2007 to May 2013, the indictment shows.
