MURDOCK — Conceding that adding the Charlotte County Justice Center expansion to the project list would require another two years’ duration of the penny sales tax, the Charlotte County Commission on Tuesday approved holding the referendum during the November general election.

But commissioners also admit that their decision to extend the proposed one-cent sales tax from six to eight years amounts to a high-stakes gamble. If voters reject the unprecedented length of the tax, the county faces a foreseeable future without any local sales-tax revenue for vital projects.
