PUNTA GORDA — Street Crimes deputies arrested a Miami man Wednesday after they found approximately 10 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. Just before 11:30 a.m., deputies patroling the area of I-75 near U.S. 17 spotted a black Chevrolet Suburban weaving in and out of traffic, traveling at 79 mph. When they stopped the vehicle, deputies asked the driver and sole occupant, Youre Vazques Gonzalez, 36, of Miami, if they could search the Suburban. Gonzalez told them he was headed to a friend’s house in Tampa and allowed them to search the vehicle. A deputy with a K-9 circled the vehicle to do an open-air sniff and the dog alerted to indicate the presence of narcotics. When deputies looked inside the rear of the vehicle, they saw a large black duffle bag that contained 19 gallon-size plastic baggies of a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. The combined weight of the contents of the baggies was about 10 pounds.
Gonzalez was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued traffic warnings for following too close and speeding. Gonzalez was booked into the Charlotte County Jail and released after he posted a $7,500 bond.
