Richard Allen Lindsey, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.
He was born Jan. 29, 1924 in Boston, Mass., to Benjamin S. Lindsey and Ivy L. (nee Parish) Lindsey.
After completing high school, Dr. Lindsey joined the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a radio-man, 51st Troop Carrier Squadron, ETO. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1948 and received a doctorate at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1962. As a Professor of History, he taught at several state universities and at Culver-Stockton College, a private liberal arts college. He completed his teaching career at Florida Southern College in 1995 as a Professor Emeritus with over 40 years in education. Dr. Lindsey was the author of many scholarly articles in professional journals as well as the author of four novels. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Pi Gamma Mu honor societies. Dr. Lindsey was a dedicated Barbershop singer in the Suncoast Statesmen for almost 20 years and served as president in 2007. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Dr. Lindsey is survived by four children, Richard R. Lindsey, Annette Lindsey, Susan Castleberry and Michele Lindsey; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013.
A memorial will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Terre Haute, Ind.
