Barbara K. Hayden, 88, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly South Windsor, Conn., passed into eternal rest Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

She was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Manchester, Conn., the daughter of Harry and Mabel (nee Bach) Kuster.

Barbara was a resident of Punta Gorda for 11 years, and a prior resident of South Windsor for 46 years. Prior to her retirement, she was an Office Administrator at Hall and Muska Oil Company.

She loved to read and garden. Barbara enjoyed making warm hats for underprivileged children for the cold New England winters — even while she was in the hospital. She was an avid fan of UConn Huskies Women’s basketball, and never missed a game. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship, the choir, and was a deacon at Pilgrim Church in Port Charlotte, Fla., as well as Broad Brook Congregational Church and First Church in South Windsor in Connecticut.

Barbara will be deeply and forever missed by her children, Susan Lopes of Punta Gorda, Shelley (John) Wilkerson of Broad Brook, Conn., and Nancy (Larry) Hux of Punta Gorda; she also will be missed by her three grandchildren, Tony (Van) Lopes of Trumbull, Conn., Teri Lopes of Canton, Conn., and David Hux of Kannapolis, N.C.; her sisters-in-law, Sarah Kuster of Granby, Conn., and Beverly Senger of South Cle Elum, Wash.; brother-in-law, Phillip (Kathy) Hayden of Edmonds, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Wendell; her parents; and her brother, Ralph Kuster of Granby.

Her life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Port Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Port Charlotte at www.tidewell.org. Barbara may be remembered kindly at www.icscremationandfunerals.com.
