PORT CHARLOTTE — When Gregory Minnaar showed up for the first day of the fifth-annual Charlotte Harbor Regatta, his first task was to find someone to race with.

His partner, Pete Ware, couldn’t make it and Minnaar, who traveled from Fort Lauderdale, needed help racing his Hobie 16. Luckily for him, Port Charlotte Middle School teacher Heather MacDonald was on hand at the registration desk and willing to help out. With the help of her father, Jack, Minnaar coaxed MacDonald into a full day of sailing.
