SEBRING — A 61-year-old man died when his mobile home was engulfed in flames Friday night in Sebring, authorities said.

Alan Michael Schunk was inside the mobile home at 30408 Tigertail Road in the Francis 1 mobile home park when it caught on fire sometime before 9 p.m.

The first to arrive on scene — at 9:03 p.m. — were Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Anti-Crime Team units, “who risked injury” trying to force their way into the home, which already had flames coming from it, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

By the time they were able to pry the door open, the structure was fully involved in flames and everyone had to pull back.

The West Sebring Volunteer Fire Department and the DeSoto City Volunteer Fire Department responded and kept the damage to the one mobile home, although next door residences suffered some minor heat damage.

Initial indications are that the fire was accidental, but the State Fire Marshal’s investigation is still ongoing, the news release added.
