SEBRING — A bear in a tree in the backyard of a DeSoto City residence Wednesday evening prompted a response from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Scott Dressel said in this type of situation, the first thing they try to do is what is called “hazing” the bear and try to scare it away from a populated area. If it becomes a problem, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission can relocate it.
The best thing people can do is just make a bunch of noise — from a safe place — and try to get the bear to move along, Dressel said. And, call the sighting in to the FWC so they can log it.
The bear in the Hoyt Avenue area of DeSoto City eventually climbed down from the tree and ran off toward the north, he said.
