The raising of the American Flag at Lakeside Historical Cemetery on Tuesday. The American Legion Post 69 and the Highlands County Moose Lodge 2494 shared the cost of erecting the 20-foot flagpole located in the cemetery’s veterans’ garden.

The flag was lowered to half-staff due to the presidential order in observance of the Texas church massacre. Before lowering the flag, American Legion Post 69 Service Officer Larry Roberts also noted that a veteran took his own life Tuesday in Highlands County.

AVON PARK — It was a historical event Wednesday at Lakeside Historical Cemetery in Avon Park as a gathering of veterans and citizens witnessed the raising of the American flag in the cemetery’s veterans’ garden.

“This is making history,” said Shirley Johnson, president of the volunteer cemetery association. “There has never been a flag in this cemetery.”
