From capturing venomous snakes in houses to providing adoption services for stray animals, Animal Services offers many services to citizens in Highlands County. During the first 180 days that the sheriff’s office took control of Animal Services, it answered 3,000 calls for assistance.

Animal Services picks up stray animals that are found roaming the area, including cats, dogs, chickens, cows, goats, horses and pigs. Owners are given five days to reclaim an animal, and then the animal is placed in a separate area for animals awaiting adoption. If an animal has a minor injury or illness such as mange, then a veterinarian will treat the animal, increasing its chances for adoption. The three local veterinarians who provide care for the animals are Dr. Jernigan, Dr. Saundersand Dr. Young.
