Although the complex nature of the pile-up means a final investigation is not complete, law enforcers know that visibility in the area was next to zero at the time of the crash because of fog, possibly mixed with smoke from a controlled burn to the west of the highway in March.

SEBRING — Almost five years ago, shortly after a four-car wreck on southbound U.S. 27 took the lives of a Sebring couple, then-Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr said carelessness, not speed, was causing wrecks on U.S. 27.

“People have not been speeding, so much,” Carr said at the time. “They need to pay attention.”
