SEBRING — Starting at 5:30 p.m. tonight, the Highlands County Board of County Commission will discuss, in a possible final hearing, the proposed fire assessment.
Business owners and residents have already said the assessment — which attempts to catch up on several years of below-market fees — is too much, too quick for local residents and the local economy to absorb. Mobile home owners have now, collectively, said the same thing. Like their business counterparts, they have also proposed that the county assess fees based on square footage, not land use.
