A painting by Florida Highwaymen, a group of young African-American artists who played an important role in Florida’s art and cultural history from 1955 to the present.

You may or may not have heard of “The Highwaymen.”They are becoming more well-known today but it wasn’t so long ago that they were an anonymous group making a living selling their original artwork out of the trunks of their cars and going door-to-door. It was the only way they could sell their paintings.

Art galleries and art shows were off limits to them. Against all odds, this group became highly successful in their self-taught jobs as artists and went unnoticed by the art world for years.
