Her name was Nellie and back in the 1950-60s she was quite popular. Many photos were taken of Highlands Hammock’s “calico deer” as she walked through the clearings deep within the Hammock, her fur remarkably spotted like a black and white Dalmatian.
Some 40 years later, another “calico” or piebald deer was born. On staff with the park at that time, I remember my fellow rangers discussing the peculiar goat they had spotted on a firelane. We wondered how a goat got into the park or who may have lost this unusual pet from one of the adjacent properties.
