Reboots of popular things have not fared well in recent years. This year alone, we got reboots of “Baywatch,” “CHiPs,” and now “Jumanji.” Both “Baywatch” and “CHiPs” took an old, beloved television franchise and turned them into movies that mocked the source material without any respect to what came before, too focused on the dirty jokes or making fun of itself to tell an interesting story.
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” goes a different route with its reboot/sequel to 1995’s “Jumanji” starring Robin Williams. The first difference is that it’s a sequel to the original that also softly reboots it for a new generation. It acknowledges the old movie as canon, but quickly moves on to go forward and not linger too long on the past.
