Thomas Petro's award-winning painting, "The Sim and Etta Revell House," captures the essence of a traditional cracker house. The Art of the River is designed to celebrate Florida's unique environment, culture and heritage.

In addition to art, colorful handmade quilts were displayed during last year's show, including this flamingo-themed beauty. Quilts will again be exhibited along with the art following the Florida theme.

Celebrate the Peace River and the heritage of our part of Florida with some of the area’s top artists. The DeSoto Arts and Humanities Council presents its Sixth annual Art of the River Competition today through Saturday in Arcadia.

“This competition recognizes our unique culture and our special environment,” said DAHC President Pamela Davis. “Artists are invited to enter paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, pottery, fabric art – what ever creative mode they choose to interpret the Peace River.” Entries are not limited to pictures of the river and wildlife – they may include historic structures, activities people enjoy such as biking or camping, our cattle and citrus industries, whatever says Southwest Florida to them.
