A snapshot of a presentation at the recent Heartland Regional Transportation Planning Organization shows five years of wrecks on U.S. 27 at Schumacher Road/Sebring Parkway. Most, said HRTPO Transportation Systems Manager Bob Crawley, are rear-end wrecks, but he said motorists' frustration at trying to get in and out of WalMart, lower left, contributes to congestion and danger there.

Clusters of wrecks gather around Avon Park, Sebring and Lake Placid along U.S. 27 in this photograph of a presentation of five-year statistics made to the Heartland Regional Transportation Planning Organization. Overall traffic counts are up, which may account for increased recent wrecks, but other factors are also involved.

SEBRING — A map marking five years of Highlands County wrecks with red dots makes U.S. 27 into a long red line.

Bob Crawley, transportation systems manager with the Central Florida Regional Planning Council, presented the map to the Heartland Regional Transportation Planning Organization’s board of directors. It shows where wrecks have occurred between 2011 and 2015, but doesn’t show how wrecks happened.
