Mary Helen Reed, 72, departed this life on Sept. 11, 2017 in Sebring, Florida after a brief illness. Born in Washington, D.C. to prominent newspaper journalist and author Jules Dubois and Maria Lucila de la Guardila, Mary spent her early childhood in Panama before moving to Coral Gables where she attended school. Mary graduated from Coral Gables High School, attended Miami Dade Junior College and briefly worked for Jordan Marsh. She went on to work at WOMETCO as a theater manager where she met her husband, John. They married in 1965. A few years later, Mary joined the travel industry where she thrived. She loved people and travel — what could have been better? She and John traveled the world together, enjoying life to the fullest.
After retirement, Mary volunteered at Vizcaya where she loved leading tours and interacting with the public. After moving to Sebring in 2009, she volunteered with the Sebring Historical Society as well as the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at Highlands Hammock State Park.
Mary loved the theater, music, movies and especially loved her friends. She could light up a room.
Mary is survived by John, her husband of 52 years, and her brother, Jules Dubois. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucy, and brother, Victor.
