John A. MacPhail, 93, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2017. Born Jan. 20, 1924 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Donald C. and Marie T. MacPhail.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Jeanne Spangler MacPhail; four children; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. MacPhail resided in Sebring, Florida in the late 1990s where they belonged to the Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. He served as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the Sebring Public Library, and The Salvation Army. He was also among the first to volunteer as a mediator for the Highlands County Court.
An active Presbyterian, MacPhail was appointed to the Permanent Judicial Commission of the Presbytery while serving as an elder of the church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, a member of various Masonic bodies and a retired judge of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
A service honoring his memory will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by Holt Andrews.
