Thelma Louise Polk, of Lake Placid, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2017. She was in the companionship of her loving family. Louise was born in Collins, Georgia on March 14, 1922. She was the daughter of Julia Elizabeth Mills and Michael L. Rogers. At the age of 6, in 1928, she came to Avon Park, Florida and was a graduate of Avon Park High School’s class of 1940. In 1946, she came to Lake Placid. She married the late Hubert Eugene Polk in 1941. Louise was an active member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in many volunteer capacities, including serving as the church treasurer. She was co-owner of Polk Hardware, founded in 1946. Louise also worked at Polk Insurance as well as was secretary for the guidance councilor at Lake Placid High School. Louise was a charter member of the Eastern Star in Lake Placid and served on the general board of Homeless and Orphan Outreach, (H.O.O.I.). Most of all, Ms. Louise was a very devoted and supportive mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was always involved in her family’s lives.

Louise is survived by her children, Gene Polk (Carole), Kathryn Durrance (Danny), and Linda Kay Webb (Darrin); grandchildren, Robyn Durrance, Stephanie Moore (Rob), Rick Durrance (Christy), Karen Moon (Doug), Jacob Webb (Alanna), and Olivia Webb. She was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Memorial United Methodist Church from 1-2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26 with funeral services beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr. Rev. Rick Durrance will celebrate. In lieu of flowers contributions can be directed to H.O.O.I., Hearts for Missions (Memorial United Methodist Church) along with Good Shepherd Hospice.
