Venice Regional’s safety grade goes up

Attorneys for Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Venice Regional Bayfront Health are preparing for a trial that might not happen, to defend their clients' certificates of need (CON) for new hospitals. A bill that's in the state Senate would eliminate the need for a CON and let both projects move forward.

If the Legislature approves, and Gov. Rick Scott signs, a bill eliminating state review of proposals for new hospitals, Venice Regional Bayfront Health can break ground for a new facility southeast of the Jacaranda roundabout.

Venice Regional Bayfront Health (VRBH) finally saw its Hospital Safety Score improve this spring, but only to a “C” after getting a “D” last spring and fall.

In a press statement, the hospital attributed the improvement to “positive responses to questions about medication safety and the hospital’s culture of safety.”
