Four Venice-area friends were on the Southwest Florida Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., May 6. The one-day trip honored veterans of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars. Visits were made to the Lincoln Memorial; World War II, Korean and Vietnam memorials; the memorial to military women; Arlington National Cemetery; and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Shown at the Korean War Memorial are: Ed Bohon, left; Bob Haycock; Tom Ortwein; and Dennis Norman.


Members of the Venice Yacht Club Foundation attended the Sarasota County Veteran’s Stand Down event. The group helps veterans and homeless from the military with legal, health and employment issues. After a buffet brunch, clothing, food and toiletries were distributed. Venice Yacht Club Foundation members will continue sponsoring this project. Dole greeted veterans who were touring Washington on a Southwest Florida Honor Flight. Sixty-eight veterans, ranging in age from 62 to 103, made the one-day trip, having been flown from Fort Myers to Washington on a chartered American Airlines plane.


Venice Masonic Lodge #301 held a Widows Son’s Appreciation night May 15 to support the outstanding work the Masonic Riders Association Chapters provide to the local communities. The Crusaders and Knights of the Eagle are branches of the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association and provide donations to charities and support for community improvement projects.
