Shelter takes in 1,000 more evacuees than expected

North Port High School is very very organized and calm as sheltered residents line up for a meal.

Kathryn Jackson has set up at least three pet shelters in the past but never in such a short time period as the one she organized at Heron Creek Middle School for Hurricane Irma.

The shelter opened Saturday afternoon, once North Port High School reached capacity, and remained open until winds reached 40 mph.
