As a goodwill gesture, before approving a lease with Village On The Isle (VOTI) last month for the use of airport land by contractor and employee vehicles during its expansion project, the Venice City Council tried to reduce the amount of rent being charged.
Airport Director Mark Cervasio had negotiated rent of $2,800 a month, which satisfied the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The agency, which oversees the airport, has guidelines that require rent of between 8 percent and 12 percent of fair-market value for airport property rented for non-aviation uses.
