Council to boost emergency powers

Venice's authority to respond to natural disasters like Hurricane Irma, which knocked this tree over in September, isn't clearly set out in the current city code. The City Council will consider a new ordinance Tuesday that will clarify and enhance what can be done after a state of emergency is declared.

Ten months after Hurricane Irma passed by, the storm is still having an impact on Venice.

The latest one was the discovery by the city attorney that city code provisions addressing civil emergencies don’t actually mention hurricanes or grant many of the powers that would be necessary to a recovery from one.
