City to sponsor Battle of the Bridges

The Venice City Council's approval of a rowing regatta on the Intracoastal Waterway in September has some local boaters upset because it will be closed to other traffic during the competition. Organizers tout the economic benefit to the city, and to boaters who rarely get to use the waterway.


Competitive rowing draws up to 85 participants each year, including participants from Venice High, Venice Middle and Laurel-Nokomis schools. Here they’re practicing in front of The Waterfront on Venice Island condominiums.

The City of Venice this week decided to add its name as an official sponsor to a first time special event with a $2,500 donation to the Battle of the Bridges.

Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program won approval in January to hold a series of head race regattas on the Intracoastal Waterway this September.
