NORTH PORT — Firefighters battled a brush fire Thursday afternoon on Massini Avenue, near Salford Boulevard, for about an hour before finally getting it under control, with the aid of a sheriff’s helicopter that doused it with water.

The exact cause of the blaze, estimated at over a half-acre, was unknown, but neighbors in the area blamed faulty wiring. Officials also were investigating whether the fire was started accidentally by a male juvenile.
