NORTH PORT — City commissioners tabled the first reading of a new ordinance Monday night that would have established North Port’s own domestic partnership registry, deciding instead to allow staff to tweak some of the ordinance’s language before its next public reading Dec. 9.

The registry, if established, would mirror the one currently in place in Venice, which allows unmarried, domestic partners — whether gay or straight — to share many of the legal rights and protections that married couples have, like to declare each other as their health care surrogate, and make end-of-life and funeral decisions.
