Venice Police Sgt. Ron Perisho, left, and Bike Patrol Officer Rob Henderson help James Mondello out of the mangroves into which he had fallen after wandering away from the assisted-living facility where he lives. Perisho said they wouldn't have been able to find Mondello but for the tracking bracelet he wears.

James Mondello doesn’t know it, but the plastic bracelet around his ankle saved his life.

Mondello, 50, who suffered brain damage in a car crash and is considered an endangered adult, wandered away from his home at A Banyan Residence Assisted Living Resort, 101 E. Base Ave., sometime Tuesday evening. The staff searched for him for about three hours, then called the Venice Police Department around 11 p.m., according to Sgt. Ron Perisho.
