Environmental assessment first, then runway

The Venice Municipal Airport reached another major milestone this week with the kickoff of a major task that marks the beginning of a $10-$12 million airport improvement project.

As part of a compromise with neighbors that took years to iron out, the city and Federal Aviation Administration a few years ago agreed to a plan that would move Runway 13-31, which parallels the Gulf, further away from the Gulf Shores neighborhood toward the Intracoastal Waterway, bringing an imaginary runway protection zone, or RPZ, from above 24 homes for safety reasons.
