SARASOTA COUNTY — A little- known program could give homeowners living along canals in the unincorporated areas of Sarasota County a chance to receive canal maintenance and dredging at a substantial savings — sometimes coming in at less than half of the actual project cost.
The Waterways Maintenance Management Protection Program, more commonly known as Navigable Waterways, is a petition-driven program by residents of neighborhoods along canals, such as in the manufactured home communities near North Port. Residents can file a petition to the county if they want a canal dredged or maintenance done on the waterway for any reason, including deepening a canal to allow for boat access, or if residents would like to plant Florida-friendly vegetation along the shoreline.
