Fresh water is bay’s enemy

The Dona/Roberts Bay Watershed, shown in yellow, extends from the Venice Jetty northeast, through the center of Sarasota County, east of Interstate I-75 and into Manatee County. Construction of a county facility to improve the water quality in Dona Bay will begin late this year or early next year.

Dona Bay is being polluted … by fresh water.

It’s a body of salt water that receives far more fresh water than it did more than 50 years ago, when work began to divert Cow Pen Slough, northeast of the bay, as part of a program to drain land for cattle ranching and orange groves.
