‘Team Boots’ vs. ‘Team Badges’ in blood donor contest

NORTH PORT — There is a friendly competition going on between the city’s fire and police departments. It all has to do with the need for blood donations for Suncoast Communities Blood Bank. Every year around this time, blood supplies decrease due to the lower population of donors, according to blood bank officials. The competition between “Team Boots” (Fire Rescue) and “Team Badges” (Police Department) is based on which team can get more people to donate blood during the month of July. Last year, Team Boots won the competition, and firefighters want to carry on that tradition again this year. (You might say Team Boots is “out for blood.”) However, there are no losers in this competition, because every unit donated can save a life.

Residents are encouraged to support the blood drive over the next two weeks by giving blood and telling blood bank staff you are donating for either “Team Boots” or “Team Badges.” Here are the dates and times to give blood in North Port in July: Wednesday, July 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., North Port City Hall, 4970 City Hall Blvd., off Sumter Boulevard; and July 26, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cocoplum Village Shops, Tamiami Trail between Sumter and Salford boulevards
