Nearly seven years ago, the economic downturn that became the Great Recession killed Mike Miller’s Tra Ponti at the Waterfront project. Now, another developer is trying to put the land between the Venice Avenue Bridge and East Tampa Avenue to use, and we wish him luck.
Over several years, Miller’s plan went through various permutations but each involved a mix of condo/hotel rooms, shops and restaurants served by a parking garage. Venice City Council went back and forth on approving it as Miller moved ahead to acquire and clear the land, relocating American Legion NO-VEL Post 159 and the Elks Lodge. Businesses on the site moved or closed.
