It made history, then almost became history

It was in the late 1930s. Uncle Bob gave us a ride all the way from Surfside to Coral Gables. We passed the famous Biltmore Golf Course and stopped at the Biltmore Hotel.

The tallest building in Florida, it was a sumptuous palace in the Mediterranean style, as was much of the Gables.
