“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
We hear this line each time an elected president takes office. Along with that responsibility comes the understanding that once sworn in, “commander in chief” of the military forces also is a title that is bestowed upon the elected one.
