Jail in Venice to close

Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight will appear before Venice City Council Wednesday to say what local law enforcement officials don’t want to hear — he’s going to close the South County Holding Facility, perhaps as early as the turn of the year.

The facility — known informally as the South County Jail, housed at the Venice Police Department — is used to hold people arrested in South County either until they bail out or need to be transported to Sarasota for further processing.
