Soon, all that will remain of the old Venice Circus Arena will be the concrete floor on which The Greatest Show on Earth held its parades and the girders which supported the roof and walls surrounding the winter quarters’ arena of The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

VENICE — It was more bad news for Circus Arena supporters last week when they learned a key state agency doesn’t support the arena’s designation on the National Historic Registry.

“I regret to say that I feel that neither of the two remaining buildings retain sufficient physical integrity to be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places,” wrote Carl Shiver, with the Florida Department of State, in an email to the city of Venice Archives Director James Hagler, dated Nov. 25.
